SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission launched skill development activities in 2015 with a tailoring training center. Since then, skill development has evolved into a separate, dedicated vertical of the mission, with more centers, a broader range of training programs, and an expanded scope that includes opportunities for gainful employment, entrepreneurship development, and more.

We have developed a platform to pilot various skill and entrepreneurial initiatives that benefit tribal families. While we still have a long way to go, we are actively exploring and aiming to provide training in high-demand, current skill sets and connect these to employment or entrepreneurial opportunities.

Current skill development activities fall into two categories:

Regular skill training through four dedicated skill centers

Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission has four skill centers running in Attappady and Idukki, namely

Balachandra Smaraka Janavaibhava Kendram,Agali

Balachandra Smaraka Janavaibhava Kendram,Agali was established as a multipurpose skill centre in 2015. The center was established in the revered memory of Sri M. Balachandran, former Vice-President and founder trustee of the mission. A retired government officer, Sri Balachandran came to Attappady in the early 2000s to support underprivileged communities, particularly tribal people. During his time here, he ran a tailoring training center for tribal girls and guided many tribal youth in selecting higher education courses and finding employment. His efforts in this sector inspired us to establish this center.

The center today offers:

The center has also established partnership with Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), Palakkad for offering various certified courses. Every year, 2-3 such JSS certified courses are held in the center.
The center is running in a rented space, equipped with 5 motorized stitching machines, 13 high-speed tailoring machines, 1 embroidery machine and 13 computers for training purposes..

For the training programs at the centre, we have established a rigorous procedure for selection, counselling and post-training follow-up of a candidate for these training programs. There is also a strong emphasis on providing soft skills training for all the batches being trained from the centre.
So far, more than 800 women and youth have undergone skill development training from the centre.
The centre also houses a garment production unit, where women trained in tailoring and embroidery join for wage employment. The unit receives regular orders for women’s wear, tops, cloth bags, masks etc from Palakkad, Koduvayur etc. 15 women are now involved in garment making. They also make cloth bags at the centre. The women earn a regular income at the centre.

Vivekananda Janasevana Kendram and Sri Abhayam E-Sevana Kendram are computer training and e-services centers established in the remote Sholayur and Pudur panchayats, respectively. Sri Abhayam Centre is jointly operated by SVMM and the Art of Living Foundation. These centers offer regular training in basic computer skills and data entry, as well as certified courses such as DCA and PGDCA. They also provide essential e-services, including printing, scanning, form-filling, information sharing, and downloading, to the residents of Sholayur and Pudur panchayats, where access to computers and internet facilities is scarce. So far, more than 150 students have received different kind of trainings from these centres.

Started in 2023, Bhaskar Rao Skill Centre, Vattavada is a similar computer training centre established in Vattavada panchayat of Idukki district. The centre also offers free tuition services for children along with computer education. Around 50 children are part of this tuition and computer training at the centre.

Vivekananda Centre for Skills and Excellence,Adimaly aims to equip individuals with essential skills through a variety of trainings. With its official inauguration, it plans to offer courses in stitching, embroidery, fashion designing, and computer Courses in collaboration with JSS, MSME, and other standardized bodies.
