The Community Childcare Project is one of the major components of Comprehensive Women and Child Healthcare Project, supported by Infosys Foundation. The project aims at improving the infant and child health among the tribal communities in Attappady.
The project was inaugurated in May 2024 and covers 150 tribal villages in Attappady. A dedicated team of trained community nurses visits all children < 5 years of age to monitor their growth indicators and developmental milestones using the Trivandrum Development Screening Chart (TDSC). This allows for the early detection of developmental delays and timely interventions to support healthy development, as well as to identify diarrhea, pneumonia or any illnesses or any danger signs. The nurses also provide education and counseling to parents, ensuring timely treatment and interventions for the children. They also encourage parents to seek medical assistance when necessary and coordinate required interventions with hospitals and field-level government staff.
In addition to this, there are periodic village-level awareness sessions conducted to raise the general awareness on postnatal care, infant and child care, child nutrition and common diseases and danger signs.
Currently, the project covers 1591 children in this age group. Initial baseline shows that 405 of these children are underweight. Out of that, 172 children are under Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) category.
Our community nurses are regularly visiting the houses of these children and providing appropriate counseling and linkage services. 7 awareness sessions were conducted between in the last 5 months
