The Program for Promotion of Education and Leadership (PROPEL) is a long-term and ambitious education initiative of ours, started in 2021. Through this program, we have identified 19 tribal students who will be nurtured to excel in a spec and ultimately become social leaders within their communities, all while remaining rooted in their own culture and values.
We are closely engaging with these 19 identified tribal students and their families. Each child is paired with a mentor, who is a senior teacher or educator. The mentors maintain a strong and open relationship with both the child and the parents, providing guidance and support in academics as well as in personal matters as the child navigates different stages of life.
In addition, mentorship camps are held at various locations during school vacations, where the students and mentors gather to participate in a range of activities together. The activities include observation visits to key locations and institutions, interaction with key personalities, learning through environment / surroundings, hands own experience of various democratic processes, arts and crafts, drama, yoga, sports, and so on. These camps are designed to build leadership, teamwork, and civic responsibility, while also promoting physical and mental well-being. Ultimately, these camps support the project’s mission to develop well-rounded, socially responsible leaders who can positively impact their communities.
We are implementing this program in partnership with V-Lead Foundation, a Kochi-based NGO started by a group of academicians, educators and child counsellors. V-Lead Foundation provides technical support to the program and supports us in organising the mentorship camps.
In addition to the camps and one-on-one mentorship, students are provided with home assignments, periodic workshops, academic classes for those struggling with any certain topics, and support to develop and nurture inherent talents or interests such as sports and arts.
