Tribal youth in areas like Attappady and Idukki face several issues like limited job opportunities, lack of necessary skills, motivation and guidance to achieve high in career, limited avenues for civic engagement and participation and so on.
Our youth development programs are designed to address these key issues. For this purpose, we have created Youth Clubs, which act as platforms for young people to come together, share ideas, and work towards community betterment. Youth Clubs also provide a place where skill development training can be imparted, along with opportunities for participation in civic and developmental issues and promotion of teamwork. These clubs will create social and cultural capital, which can be leveraged to develop tribal youth as changemakers in their own communities.
We started our youth development work in 2020 with the formation of Youth Clubs and by registering them as formal units. Over these four years, while working closely with this age group, we have gained several insights and learning, which have been useful in reinventing and evolving our approach to suit the needs of the youth.
In 2022, we identified 10 youth clubs and provided them with mentorship support in managing a youth club, as well as in personal development, youth leadership, and youth’s role in community development. This was supported by EY-GDS
In 2023, we jointly implemented a youth leadership program in collaboration with a Delhi-based NGO, Haiyya. This was imparting a pedagogy developed by Haiyya, which would create youth leaders who are empowered and equipped with values and skills to address their problems in the community and lead collectives. This was supported by the Azim Premji Foundation and SVMM provided ground support. As part of this project, three youth leaders were trained to develop another set of 30 leaders (10 leaders each). The program included regular residential leadership training and mentorship sessions, and after a year, these leaders had developed several project plans for village-level development.
In 2024, we started a Youth leadership program in Attappady and Idukki with a slightly different approach, again supported by EY-GDS. Youth leaders were identified through a youth fair covering all the villages. These fairs also serve as venues for training in essential skills such as observation, participation, leadership, communication, and critical thinking. Interactive sessions encourage participants to reflect on their abilities, recognize their strengths, and identify areas for growth, fostering their journey toward becoming effective leaders within their communities.
The identified leaders are further provided with intensive leadership training and mentorship support. These leaders further lead the creation and strengthening of youth clubs and youth-based collectives in their villages. These youth clubs will become a platform for providing skill, vocational and entrepreneurial training.
